Getting Ready

The Jaywalker sock takes a much deserved rest to get ready for Socktoberfest.

Here’s a progress shot to show how far a long the sock is before Socktoberfest starts.

In other knitting news

I didn’t upload any more knitting related photos last night. I have been doing some current knitting but I can’t show it. I’m working on a present for someone who I don’t think reads this blog but does look at my flickr photos.

I will have current knitting photos soon though. I have joined the Socktoberfest group on flickr. I’ve decided to work on nothing but socks for the month of October. I’m going to bust some sock yarn stash!

First order of business will be to finish my Jaywalker socks. Then I will knit as many pairs of socks as possible for the rest of the month. I’d like to give a couple of pairs for Christmas gifts this year. It’s time to start knitting on the bus again.

Now I have to get back to knitting my present since September is almost over.

Where there’s a Will, there’s a sock

The Jaywalker sock got to meet Shakespeare. Okay, not really. The sock did get its photo taken with a plague of Shakespeare.

This was taken at Kronborg Slot in Helsingor, Denmark. This castle was the inspiration for Elsinore Castle in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Shakespeare never visited the castle but he heard about it.

Jaywalker on a train

G and the Jaywalker enjoy some sunshine on a train.

Yes, we actually saw the sun during our honeymoon.

Den Gamle By, part 2

Knitting, spinning and weaving were very important in Scandinavia in the past. All of the open air museums that we visited had exhibits that featured many of these. Almost every house had a spinning wheel.

Even the more wealthy homes had spinning wheels.

Knitting was also featured in many of the homes.

Dem Gamle By also featured a yarn making factory and a yarn dyeing factory.

And here’s a non-knitting photo that I really like.

As per usual, click on the photo for a larger view.

Den Gamle By

“The Danes’ seemingly limitless enthusiasm for dressing up and creating history reaches its zenith at Den Gamle By.” So says the Lonely Planet Scandinavian Europe. It is very an impressive open air museum. I came across three different ladies who were knitting.

I may have found my dream job. I wouldn't mind wearing a costume if I got to knit all day for tourists.

I call this next photo “Knitting Still Life with Apple Core.” Although I don’t think the Louet carders are historically accurate.

Socks on a Train

I finished the diagonal socks on the train from Stavanger to Kristiansand, Norway.

Just as I was taking this first shot the train went into a tunnel.

This second shot is after we got out of the tunnel. The first shot is too dark and this one is too light. The yarn is Grasshopper from Hello Yarn.

Kristiansand was our last stop in Norway. It was sad to leave. But, next stop… Denmark!

The Sock in Stavanger, Norway

I worked on the sock on the ferry from Bergen to Stavanger. It doesn’t look like I got a whole lot done. I can’t even remember how long the ferry ride was.

You can sort of see Stavanger’s old town (click on photo for a larger picture) across the harbor from our hotel room. I love how there’s one blue house among all the white ones. If that blue house wasn’t on a major street that’s where I’d live.

I believe the next photos of the sock will be a complete pair. Stay tuned.

I have some honeymoon knitting to show you. And it’s about time. I should have more regular photos now.

My knitting bag holding my seat on the ferry from Bergen to Stavenger, Norway. Most of my knitting was done on ferries, trains and the occasional bus.

Here’s my green diagonal sock saying goodbye to Bergen.

No News

I haven't had much time for knitting this week nor did I upload a lot of honeymoon photos. I'll do better this weekend and next week.

Here's a photo of me recovering from jet lag.

Honeymoon Photos

I am VERY slowly getting my honeymoon photos up on flickr. How slowly? I’m still only on our second day in Oslo. That would be the second day of our honeymoon.

You can follow my slow progress here:

Click on the photo to a link to my flickr page. Hopefully I'll have some knitting photos soon.

Honeymoon Haul

Here is all the knitting related items I bought while on our honeymoon in Scandinavia.

For a larger view, click on the photo.

At the top is the pair of wrong size double pointed needles I bought in Bergen, Norway. Drops is a Scandinavian knitting magazine with some beautiful sweater patterns. The red variegated yarn is 400m of hand-dyed Swedish wool. The women at the shop said it would be enough to make a shawl with.

The green variegated yarn is 280 grams hand dyed Estonian wool. The women at this shop said it would be enough to make a shawl from. I just don’t know how many yards/meters it is. The purple/grey is 60 grams of wool for spinning.

The pattern on the left is a Norwegian pattern for gloves with a bird motif. I got it for Adina. It’s supposed to be a traditional Norwegian design.

I will post photos from the trip soon.
